Christmas Sales Luna Premium Hypoallergenic 100% Waterproof Mattress Protector - Queen Size - Made In The USA Overview

Enjoy peace of mind knowing your mattress is protected from liquid spills, urine, dust mites and allergens by applying a Luna Mattress Protector. Luna Premium American Made waterproof mattress protectors are of the highest quality and carry a full replacement 10 year warranty. As many have found out, once an unprotected mattress is soiled by fluids, it's nearly impossible to fully remove. A soiled mattress can result in an unsanitary environment for you and your family and may even ruin your mattress altogether. If liquids are ever spilled onto the mattress, simply remove the protector and place directly into the washing machine. Luna premium mattress protectors are also a must have for those suffering from allergy triggers such as pollen, mold, dust mites and fungus. Luna protectors prevent allergy triggers from passing through the membrane material while still allowing the mattress to breathe. Periodically wash the mattress protector, like you would your sheets, and you'll be able to effectively remove allergy causing triggers that may be resting on the surface of the protector. Luna mattress protectors work by using premium cotton terry bonded with a hypoallergenic waterproof membrane base layer. To enable the mattress to still breathe, Luna utilizes an exclusive Airflow Technology made up of proprietary microscopic pores in the membrane layer. These pores allow air to pass through while preventing liquids and dust mites from penetrating. The protector's ability to breathe extends the life of the mattress and also works to control temperature preventing our protectors from sleeping hot. Fitted sheet style elastic sides are then attached making it a perfect fit for any mattress profile. As mentioned above, all Luna products are exclusively made in the USA and contain no PVC's or phthalates.

Kool Aid Stains In Carpet - Removing Them

It's not always possible to remove kool aid stains from carpet. All "red stains" are difficult to get out. Red coloring used in pop, candy, and other foods generally doesn't flush out with water. However, if you try the methods used by professional carpet cleaners, you may get that stain out.

Organic Wool Pillows

First, use a shop-vac to suck some of the kool aid out, if you can get to the stain quickly. This can stop the spill from entering the carpet fibers. Getting out some or all of the remaining stain takes time.

Organic Wool Pillows

Start with Dawn dishwashing detergent - the original blue type. Add five or six drops to two cups of warm water. Dampen a white cotton cloth with this solution and lay it over the stain. Then place a clothes iron on top of it, set on "low".

Let this sit for fifteen minutes, and don't press down. The red stain will start to wick up into the cloth. You should see red on the cloth. Fold it to use a clean part or apply a new cloth, and repeat the process.

It takes patience to get red stains out of carpet, but even year-old Kool Aid stains have been removed using this method. Repeat the process again and again until there is no more transfer of the red stain to the cloth. Rinse the spot with water, blot it up, and dry it quickly. Quick drying prevents any stain deeper down from wicking up to the surface.

To summarize: use clean white cotton cloth (several), low heat, and don't press or rub. Let the color wick up into the cloth at its own rate, then rinse and dry the area quickly. You can, at the very least, lighten Kool Aid stains and other red stains in carpet using this technique.

Futon Covers Decorate Your Futon Mattress Beautifully

Would you like to create a warm, comfortable, and inviting room? A casual style room has a few elements that will coordinate well with futon covers to make your room homey and beautiful. To begin with in a casual room, keep the details simple and the elements rectangular or softly curved. If you like futon covers, make sure you have the fabric in textured, low-luster surfaces and add soft upholstery with horizontal lines. Try to stay away from perfect symmetry. A touch of whimsey is a great way to start when it comes to decorating a casual style room. Consider the following items for inclusion in the room. Try using a wooden candlestick for a lamp base, an older reconstructed birdhouse with stacks of old luggage for a side table, and for the coffee table, how about a low, vintage ironing board!

Organic Wool Pillows

You'll be amazed at how you can incorporate casual decorating when it comes to cottage, American country, Shabby Chic, French Country, or a rustic theme. You can incorporate these elements into a country kitchen, guest room, bath or just about any room in the home where a relaxed atmosphere is desired. If you have a futon mattress in a room, dress it up with some imaginative, textured futon covers.

Organic Wool Pillows

Upholstered pieces of furniture are usually oversized and slip covered. You can cover upholstered furniture in neutral tones such as beige, gray, tan or off-white, but you can use other colors also. Try using pastels together for a peaceful feeling or even try some dark tones such as olive, rust, navy, forest green, wine or even a touch of cranberry for a punch. Pillows are usually textured rather than shiny and there are many fantastic types of materials on the market. You can incorporate natural fibers like linen, wool, and cotton into futon covers. If you want to give it a more natural look, there are numerous synthetic materials available that can add durability, too. Either way you look at it, have fun decorating your casual room!

What to Do If You're Allergic to Your Bed

Do you or your children regularly wake up with itchy, watering eyes and a runny or blocked nose? Do you sneeze when you shake out your pillows and bedclothes? If so, you could be suffering from an allergic reaction to your bedding.

Organic Wool Pillows

A number of factors can trigger allergic reactions, such as pets, or smoking in the bedroom. But one of the most common and yet invisible causes of bedding allergies is house dust mites.

Organic Wool Pillows

House dust mites and allergies

House dust mites are microscopic organisms that feed on human skin and can be found in everyone's home. They thrive in warm, humid places where there is plenty of food, so beds provide the ideal environment for them to live and breed in. Since we spend around a third of our time in bed, we breathe in vast quantities of these house dust mites. Most of us are blissfully unaware of their presence. Some people, however, can experience a hypersensitive reaction to proteins found in the excretion of these dust mites.Whenever you touch or shake your bedclothes, these proteins are inhaled or come into contact with your skin. If you suffer from a house dust mite allergy, your body will produce antibodies, which release a chemical called histamine.

This in turn leads to swelling and irritation of the upper respiratory passages, causing a range of symptoms:

Hay fever Runny nose Sneezing Watering eyes Asthma Worsening of existing eczema

The tendency to be allergic to house dust mites often runs in families. The good news is that there are several ways in which you can protect you and your family from these pests and ensure everyone gets a good night's sleep.

The best bedding to prevent house dust mite allergies

Allergies are often made worse by bedding made from or filled with natural materials, such as feathers and wool. Synthetic materials or high quality cotton (which is tightly woven so that dust mites can't get through the cloth) are best for allergy sufferers. Synthetic materials are easy to wash and dry regularly, which can help protect you from dust mites. Bedding should be washed at a temperature of at least 60°C to kill the dust mites. Another tip for removing dust mites from your bedding is to leave your duvet, pillows and mattress out in the fresh air for an hour every day, or for as often as possible depending on the weather. You can even wrap duvets and pillows in plastic bags and leave them in the freezer for 24 hours once a month to rid them of the dust mites. If you or your children have cushions, teddy bears, and other soft toys on your beds, these can act as dust traps, so make sure they are regularly washed and aired too. Finally, you may want to consider buying a cheap mattress so you can replace it for a new one after six months when the dust mites have infiltrated it.

House dust mites and your bedroom

Dust mites hate dry, cold air, so you can significantly reduce their numbers simply by letting fresh air into your bedroom every day. If the lower edge of your window is moist when you wake up in the morning, it suggests there is too much humidity in the air, which may be exacerbating your dust mite problem.

Don't use a spray to get rid of house dust mites, as these can worsen the symptoms of your allergy. Instead, have as little furniture as possible in the room. Wooden or plastic chairs are preferable, as there is no fabric or upholstery for the mites to live in. Reduce clutter in your room and don't leave anything lying around that gathers dust, such as dried flowers, books or old clothes.

If possible, buy plastic curtains and dust them every day. If you have rugs on the floor, wash them every week and clean your walls, woodwork and floor with a wet cloth. You can buy an allergen filter to fit on your vacuum cleaner, which you should use every day if you can, but at least twice a week. Wear a mask when cleaning to reduce your exposure to allergenic dust, and don't allow smoking in the house as this may worsen your symptoms.

Chemical allergies and organic bedding

House dust mites are not responsible for all bedding allergies. Some people are hypersensitive to the chemicals used to manufacture, treat and dye bedding and bed linen. If you suspect your allergy is caused by chemicals rather than dust mites, investing in a set of organic bedding could benefit your health. Organic bedding is made using natural farming and production methods and is not exposed to chemicals during the growing or manufacturing process. Organically manufactured textiles have less impact on the environment...which will help you sleep more easily too!

Fabrics - How To Care For What

Acetate: A synthetic fabric. It doesn't like biological washing powder, vinegar or pre-wash stain removers. It also doesn't like soaking, rubbing, ironing, rubbing, wringing, twisting or spinning. This is a definite "dry clean only" fabric. It looks a bit like silk.

Organic Wool Pillows

Acrylic: A synthetic fabric that's quite washable, although some prefer to be hand washed only (check the label). A cold wash is best. Don't bleach. Avoid ironing it when it is wet or damp and only use a cool iron. It looks a bit like wool and is often mixed with wool.

Organic Wool Pillows

Angora: A natural fabric made from goat hair. Hand wash gently in warm water using hand soap. Dry flat and do not twist, wring or rub - this will make it stretch or turn to felt. Avoid ironing it.

Broderie anglaise: This is usually made from cotton, but can be made from polycotton. It can be machine washed (if the garment it is attached to allows this) but put it in a pillowcase or lingerie bag to stop the holes getting hooked on things.

Calico: This is a type of light cotton weave with a particular print (usually floral - think Laura Ashley). As it is cotton, it can handle hot washes, tumble drying and hot irons. It will probably need ironing, too.

Cheesecloth (muslin): Very fine cotton. For some reason, muslin/cheesecloth garments usually run colour. Wash items separately, preferably by hand, although you can use warmer water. It can be ironed, preferably when damp. Don't wring it.

Chiffon: Very light see-through fabric made from synthetics or (luxury of luxuries) silk. Hand wash the synthetic chiffons; dry clean the silks. Alternatively, just spot-treat any dirty marks.

Corduroy: Usually made from cotton or a cotton blend and is quite hard wearing. It is a bit more delicate to wash and should be turned inside out to protect the distinctive pile. If you have to iron it, iron it damp and turn it inside out.

Cotton: A natural fibre that's very tough. It can handle the hottest washes and the hottest irons. It can shrink when new, so be careful with this. If buying cotton for dressmaking, preshrink the fabric by washing it before cutting out the pieces and sewing the garment.

Down: These are soft feathers usually used to stuff things. Wash in cold water using a delicate cycle. Tumble dry on low or dry in the sun- it will take ages. Fluff it up periodically to move the feathers around and stop them clumping. If you dry clean it, air it well afterwards, as the down will trap the toxic fumes - not what you want to breathe in while you sleep.

Fur: Real fur should either be brushed or (if really dirty) dry cleaned. You can spot-clean marks with shampoo or hand soap and cold water, stroking in the direction of the fur.

Lace: Can be made from cotton, linen or synthetics. It is best to use a delicate cycle on the washing machine or handwash it. If washing lace in the washing machine, put it in a pillow case or a lingerie bag to stop it snagging on zips, buttons and hooks, which can tear the lace.

Leather: Tough as old boots - literally. You can hand or machine wash it, but it will go hard after drying. It is better to spot clean leather. Salt water ruins leather, so soak a leather item in milk if this happens. Then rinse. To soften leather after it has dried hard, work it to and fro in your hands - roll it and unroll it a few times to soften it.

Nylon: A synthetic fabric. It prefers to be washed in cold water, but can handle being machine washed on regular. It dries quickly and doesn't usually need ironing.

Satin: This is a finish rather than a fabric type. It is made from silk or from synthetic fabrics. Silk satin should be hand washed, but synthetic silks can cope with the delicate cycle in your washing machine. If you iron it, use a cool iron and iron it on the dull side to protect the shiny finish.

Velvet: Can be made from synthetics, cotton or silk. Wash inside out, using the delicate cycle. Hand wash or spot-treat silk velvet. To fluff the pile back up again after drying, hold the item over a steaming kettle (be careful not to get burnt).

Wool: A natural fibre from all sorts of animals. Hand wash and dry flat. Don't wring it or spin it. If for carpet a professional carpet cleaning is fine.

Made for side sleepers: The Rejuvenation Organic Buckwheat Pillow provides a great solution for side sleepers who need between 4" - 6" of pillow height. Together these two fillings help you establish nd maintain comfortable spinal alignment all night long. Adjustable: Place the pillow on your bed with the wool on top for 4" of loft. If you are broad shouldered and need more loft, rotate the pillow a quarter turn so that it sits on its side with the wool facing you. For a softer feel and less support, open the zipper and remove some of the hulls. 20"x 14.5"x 4.5" Certified Organic Cotton Ticking/ Natural Certified Organic Buckwheat Hulls Pure Eco Wool Many people ask about the difference between buckwheat hulls and millet hulls. Under your head they work similarly, both molding to your contours and keeping your head elevated and your neck supported. Millet is denser than buckwheat. It is lighter in weight and smaller in size. It is quieter than buckwheat, which makes a soft shuffling sound while you are getting settled. Buckwheat is odorless; millet has a slight grassy odor that dissipates after a few weeks. How to Get Rid of Acne Scars

Scars left by acne on skin appear ugly. This leaves a painful impressions on the patient, people genuinely try to get rid of these scars. They try everything from topical creams, to gels, pills and lotions to remove these scars. Everyone wants flawless skin. However, acne marks may make you feel like hiding your face inside a pillow.

Organic Wool Pillows

Acne scars develop as soon as you pop pimple or squeeze it out. Popping or squeezing results in a permanent mark at the affected area. The deeper you have peeled the skin, the darker is the mark. Most of the times this action leaves a scar and it gets very difficult to get rid off this scar.

Organic Wool Pillows

Don't panic if you have already developed an acne scar. There are some home remedies that will help you eliminate these scars on your face.

Here are some tricks to solve your problem:

a) Take fresh juice of lemon. Now dip a cotton ball in it. Pat your face with the cotton ball and let it dry naturally. Some people may find this a little irritating. You may dilute the lemon juice with some rose water or plain water. Let the surface dry naturally for 15-20 minutes and wash your face with water after a while. Repeat this process at least four times a week and you will see a remarkable change in your skin structure.

b) Prepare a paste with some sandalwood powder and rose-water. Now add 2-4 drops of lime juice to it. Apply this paste on your face and neck. Now, let the solution dry naturally. After that, you need to rinse your face and neck thoroughly. Do this on a regular basis to get best results.

c) Applying cucumber juice on your face with cotton wool. This should be your daily regime during summers. This will help cooling off the skin and tighten the pores. Cucumber juice is extremely helpful in making your skin glow and makes it feel fresh.

d) Another popular homemade remedy for removing acne marks into make a paste of apple and honey. First, make apple paste and then add about 4-6 drops of honey. Apply this mask on your face.

e) Wash off after 15 minutes. This paste helps tightening pores and also makes complexion lighter.

There are some technical procedures that will help you get rid of acne scars:

a) Dermabrasion

This is different from micro-dermabrasion that removes top layer of dead surface skin cells from the face. Dermabrasion is actually a coarser method that removes further layers. The dermatologist will numb your face and then remove layers. The recovery time takes about a couple of weeks. Your skin will scab. Once the scab falls, you will get fresh and glowing skin.

b) Laser resurfacing

This is a method that cleans away pimples and get rid of acne scars. The use of laser is prominent in this method. CO2 laser and YAG laser are the two lasers used commonly in this procedure. This procedure removes the top layers of the skin that has been damaged. The recovery time is a couple of weeks. Your doctor may also apply a topical ointment for speeding up the recovery process.

c) Augmentation

Here, the dermatologist injects fillers usually collagen under the skin. This smoothens acne scarred area. The doctor may take fat from other places in your body and inject instead of collagen. The recovery period is fast.

Always consult a dermatologist prior to deciding on a treatment for acne.

Going Green - Eco-Friendly Home Redecorating

Global warming and greenhouse gases have been a hot topic of conversation throughout the last decade. While most people cannot influence the environment as heavily as major industrial companies do, many desire to be as environmentally friendly as possible. If you are considering a "green" approach to decorating your home, read these practical tips.

Organic Wool Pillows

Renovating the carpet or other floor covering is usually the first step in remodeling a room. Most synthetic carpet materials contain resins, formaldehyde, and other toxic substances. These chemicals increase the likelihood of health problems such as allergies and asthma. Carpets made of natural fibers such as wool or linen are much safer. Furthermore, most of these products use backing made of cotton or natural latex, which are healthier and safer to recycle than foam or rubber.

Organic Wool Pillows

Another option can be even more appealing. Lose that old, stained carpeting and select natural hardwood floors instead. These floors can be finished with water-based, non-toxic stains or finishes that enhance the wood's natural beauty. Moreover, hardwood, unlike carpeting and other flooring, does not increase a person's risk of allergic reaction or contain potentially hazardous chemicals.

Recycling old furniture is another excellent way to redecorate while remaining earth-friendly. Frequently, you can find great buys on vintage furniture at secondhand shops, flea markets, or garage sales. Usually, a fresh coat of milk paint or water-based stain will create unexpected treasures from someone's old junk. Even if the furniture has been damaged beyond repair, the wood can frequently be reclaimed, and, with some tools, you can create interesting new pieces with a little time and effort.

A great way to dress up these unusual finds is to purchase pillows, throws, or cushions made of natural fibers. If you have a talent for sewing, you might try your hand at redesigning new, artistic furniture accessories from old draperies or other fabrics around the house. Frequently, you can also pick up a number of natural materials at auctions or even antique shops. Be creative, and use your imagination!

Many smaller craft stores and hobby artisans are using recycled materials to design home furnishings such as picture frames, blankets, and even vases. These articles are created from a wide variety of items such as bicycle tires, recycled glass, and even soda bottle materials. These interesting accessories provide useful furnishings that may also prove to be fascinating topics of conversation. In addition, recycling these items rescues a number of potentially useful items that otherwise might decay uselessly in a landfill.

If you are considering redecorating your home, and desire to be environmentally friendly, open your mind - and your imagination - to the endless possibilities offered by recycled and reclaimed treasures of days gone by. Resourcefulness is the key, and, if you are willing to work at it a little, you will be able to construct original, ingenious pieces of art to furnish your home. Your decorating skills will soon be the talk - and the envy - of all your friends!

Creating a Perfect Eco Friendly Home

Home is the place where you live. Creating a perfect eco friendly home is not a difficult task but you have to use every accessory that is eco friendly starting from the flooring. When looking for eco friendly carpet, try choosing carpets that are made from eco friendly materials like 100 percent wool or even from dyed yarn. You can get vegetable dyes in many different colors and shades and these are mostly healthier for our environment. There are a number of other options available like the ones made from recycled plastic. When selecting padding try choosing 100 percent cotton material or any recycled material.

Organic Wool Pillows

You could use water based glue for installation or even carpet tacks that are very much secure. Even some of the most well maintained carpets when replaced could find difficult to dispose and eco friendly way. They could last for around 20000 years when tried to dispose in the landfills and the toxic chemicals could simply leach the ground reaching their way to water ways. Almost every year around 1.8 million tons of rugs are simply disposed in the environment. So try to find a way to donate your replaced carpet to someone needy or to any installer who will dispose it eco friendly way.

Organic Wool Pillows

Hardwood flooring from any sustainable forest may certainly be a very good option like the cork. It provides insulation and soft floor. As these floors are usually hypoallergenic so they are simply sustainable to most of the people including one who has asthma. They are usually made from tree bark that reaches its maturity within three years.

You can also use bamboo for flooring purpose. Bamboo tree grows quickly and needs less water. These floorings are much harder as compared to maple and oak and last for a longer period of time. They are also easy to maintain and are easily sustained in many different colors. Just like floors your mattresses are also cause of environment problems. Most of these conventional mattresses are generally treated with PBDEs and made flame retardant. This chemical can easily get accumulated in the blood and cause thyroid, liver and neurodevelopment toxicity. This chemical can be found in a number of household items like cushions, fabrics, plastics and mattresses.

Mattresses made from organic material are much eco friendly and should be used in most of the household items. Your furniture can also play an important role in making your house environmental friendly. But it certainly does not mean to buy all the old fashioned furniture. A number of good companies do manufacture eco friendly furniture. You could make use of bamboo to a greater extent.

Try using bamboo to decorate the frame of your sofas or even chairs. You can also try using sustainable wood. For upholstery you can try using cotton or even hemp. Couches can be used that are made from recycled plastics. Throw pillows and curtains made from hemp can be used. These are usually available in wide variety and colors and may even suit your décor.

FAB Fabrics - A Look at Eco-Friendly Fabrics and Their Properties

There are so many fabrics out there that the fashion world has started to recognise as being both great to design with and good for the planet. Looking at Eco-fabrics is not as simple as man-made or natural, organic or not. It is about everything from how they are grown, where, how, by whom, what methods are used, how much is paid and how does this affect the planet?

Organic Wool Pillows

It is also important to see using eco-fibres as something that will ensure the long term health of our planet and not just people jumping on the trendy green band wagon. There are many misconceptions about natural fabric production and many facts that are not known.

Organic Wool Pillows

An eco-fabric will be something that it is good to grow that fits in with the local wildlife and plantation and will not harm the land or the workers involved when it is harvested. The dyes used, have to be chemical free and natural and would be produced locally to where it is grown rather than flown miles away. An eco-fabric is durable and requires only low temperatures to wash and air dries quickly, and will decompose naturally when disposed of.

There are many types of eco fabrics available including wool from different animals and fabrics produced from various plants, and even some materials made from recycled plastics.

From Animals: Alpaca's have thick coats and make incredibly warm clothing, the fibre is stronger, lighter and more resilient than tradition sheep wool, it is finer than cashmere and equally as warm as Gortex. Sheep's Wool is also taken ethically without using a technique called "mulesing" which takes a layer of skin off their backsides to stop flies. Wool from all animals traditionally used (sheep, llama, goats and camels) has antibacterial properties and built in U.V. ray protection. It's soft but strong, lasts well, and is wrinkle dirt and fire resisitent.

From Plants: Bamboo grows at an amazing rate and is one of the planets most sustainable resources and it's 100% biodegradable. As a fabric it is super soft, stretchy, breathable, absorbent, hypoallergenic and anti bacterial and can be burnt and made into a fabric for extra deodorising properties, ideal for socks.

Hemp is also a great fabric to make clothing from, although it is not soft to touch, it is very durable, water resistant and washes easily, which makes it ideal for outdoor wear. Ingeo is made from corn and is like a natural but man-made version of polyester which is a synthetic. It is great, used in pillows, duvets, clothing and even carpeting. It is the first commercially viable natural but man-made fabric.

Organic Cotton is organic in the methods it is grown in and harvested and doesn't harm the environment by using nasty chemicals and pesticides, which inevitably effect our water supply.

Organic Silk is also available without the cost to the environment; the properties of silk are well known.

From Other Sources: Tencel is a natural man-made fibre developed from the pulp of trees grown on land unsuitable for crops or grazing. Soya is made from a tofu manufacturing waste product where the soy protein is liquefied and makes a soft material. Somalor is also extracted from corn but can be dyed to make really vibrant, exciting colours. Sashwashi is made from Japanese paper and the kumazasa herb and is similar to linen.

There are many eco friendly fabrics available to make any designers fashions fashionable with the green crowd too. Saving the planet is just a little bit trendy at the moment but hopefully these eco-friendly fabrics will become more of a main stream manufacturing habit the whole world can wear!

The History of the Mattress

Our parents have always told us how bad they had it when they were kids. With no video games, no Internet, and the constant battle of walking uphill both ways, it's amazing they had enough energy to bear children. But luckily, the younger generations have one rebuttal to the "when I was a kid" mantra: "Well, at least you didn't have to sleep on mattresses constructed of leaves and grass and held together with animal skin."

Organic Wool Pillows

The history of the mattress is probably not something that is taught in most schools, with revolutions and wars often placed ahead of a good night's sleep. But, the mattress, like everything else, has a past, present and future.

Organic Wool Pillows

In the beginning

In the Neolithic period, people began sleeping on primitive beds, the ones our parents evaded made with leaves and grass and wrapped in hides. Though not as comfy as the modern day mattress, these first beds were the better alternative to sleeping on the ground and huddling together with other pre-historic humans for warmth, which might not have been as bad if pre-historic humans were better looking.

Moving up

Egyptian pharaohs began sleeping in beds raised from the ground after discovering that sleeping in higher platforms was more beneficial. Soon everyone began to "sleep like an Egyptian" and beds were raised off the grounds everywhere.

The Greeks are credited for making beds less about sleep and more about decor. They created ornate bedsteads, lacing them with hide strips and topping them with animal pelts. Pillows, costly and gaudy, became a symbol of status and typically those who were allowed to rest their heads, were heads above most others.

Then enter, who else, the Romans. The Romans are credited with discovering the concept of the waterbed. When in Rome, a person would recline in a cradle of warm water until they became drowsy. Once sleepiness set in, they were lifted onto a mattress and rocked to sleep. Romans, because of this, probably took several naps a day.

In the Renaissance Era, mattresses were filled with pea shucks, straw, or feathers and stuffed into cloth cases. They were then covered with velvets and silks. The 16th and 17th centuries saw mattresses similar to the Renaissance Era, but out went the velvet and silk and in came the latticework of rope. The term "sleep tight," because the latticework needed regular tightening, was derived from this.

Taking Form

If mattresses could talk, they would probably say that the 18th century belonged to them, but the Industrial Revolution hogged all their limelight. It was this era that saw mattresses take shape, form, and become an integral part of a restful life. They began being stuffed with cotton or wool and mattress covers started to be made of quality linen. Then, perhaps actually being the best thing since sliced bread, the box spring was introduced.

After the box spring, the coil spring and the innerspring mattresses sprung up. With these, so did mattresses as we now know them.

Bedding on them

Mattresses, as they are in the present day, have come a long way from animal skins and grasses of yore. Gaining in quality and comfort, they are now viewed less as beds and more as a vital part of life: a good mattress is essential to sleep function, a function that dictates a great deal of our health, and our lives.

While the past saw mattresses made of leaves, perhaps the future will see them stuffed with clouds. In the meantime, natural latex, visco memory foam, and polyurethane are the best bets for present comfort.
