Even if you don't live in a resort area, guests are bound to arrive at your doorstep from time to time - visiting relatives and friends who show up to share special occasions with you. When this happens, you want them to be as comfortable as possible. Here are some tips to help you provide a comfortable getaway for your guests:
In many cases, the guest room is a smaller room (smaller than the master bedroom, in any case) and often it is used for other purposes as well - maybe a home office or a sewing room. In this instance, you will need a bed that will allow for this. There are several options to choose from. A day bed is a compact and narrow bed that can be placed along the wall in order to save space. A Murphy wall bed is a full size bed that folds up against the wall - this is a great choice if you need to use the space when you don't have guests. And, of course, there is the sofa bed - which will provide seating when not being used as a bed.

Making the bed inviting - Of course, you will want the bed to be inviting and welcoming for your guests. You will want to provide your guests with the best so don't skimp on the sheet set - and be sure to have an extra set on hand. To make the bed look inviting, use an attractive comforter or duvet as well as throw pillows to create a warm and enticing atmosphere.

Providing the Amenities
To really make your guests feel at home, you should try to think of things that they might need - things that will make them feel as if the room is their own, along with some little personal touches that will make them feel welcome. Consider placing these items in the room: a reading lamp, television, telephone, alarm clock, radio, books, and framed art, a small stereo system. If you have a guest bathroom, be sure to include all of the necessities: extra toothbrushes, hairbrushes or combs, soaps, hair dryer...things that will make your guest feel at home. Right before your guests are due to arrive, add a few personal touches to let them know that you are happy to have them - maybe some fresh flowers or a welcome basket containing nuts, fruits, or chocolates.
Storage
Storage is one thing that sometimes poses a problem for the guest room, especially if the room doubles for something else. Even if the room isn't used for another purpose, many times people will use the closets and dressers to store their own clothes that may be out of season. If this is the case, you will need to make a few changes before your guests arrive. Be sure that the closet is arranged in order to provide plenty of space for your guests' clothes - and be sure to provide sturdy hangers rather than flimsy wire hangers. Little touches like this will go a long way in making your guest feel comfortable. Another thing to keep in mind is making sure any dressers or chests that are available for your guests' use are empty and ready for them. Little extras are the things that guests will remember.
